Tuesday, 24 June 2008 00:00

On the 23rd of June Jews of Leipzig origin were invited in the Israeli religious community, after the peace prayer in the Nikolai church, for a gathering. Over there and at the 25th of June we met Mr. Ze'ev Buchsbaum, one of his sons Menachem and his granddaughter Noa - 3 generations. Ze'ev survived the Holocaust in Holland as a servant on a farm. The danger of betrayal was permanent and often there were crackdowns. In an adventures way he could escape to Marseille and from there he reached with a fisher boat of the Jewish agency Haifa. In Haifa two British destroyers were waiting for them and arrested them. Ze'ev was able to stay and he started a family. Today he lives in Kfar Saba north of Tel Aviv.

In July I visited him in his flat and filmed and shot an interview. He showed me all his souvenirs from Holland. Maria and I want the municipality of Leipzig wouldn't invite just Jews of Leipzig origin but also there children and grandchildren. There is still the huge task of reconciliation. The Holocaust left also to the offspring of the survivor's psychic traumas. The municipality, the councillars and the mayor approve this.
